Obituary for Khooblall Persaud

With deep sorrow and an abundance of love, we mourn the passing of Khooblall (Jai, “Dad”)Ganga Persaud at age 78, on November 30th, 2023 in Cambridge, Ontario, Canada. Jai was born on February 12, 1945 in 47 Village, Corentyne, Berbice, Guyana to Gangapers aud Prossram and Chitrakha Gangapersaud (née Cheddie) who predeceased him in death. He is survived by his treasured wife, Dindeah “Oma” Persaud (née Boodram), and their beloved children, Valantina Natasha Persaud (Jeremy Swampillai), Devindra Khooblall “Ravi” Persaud, and Sonia Nadia Persaud (Jason Mugford). His legacy will shine brightly through his grandchildren, Owen Persaud, Logan Persaud, Xavier Swampillai, Jake Mugford, Josh Mugford, and Aurora Swampillai.“Dad” will be cherished in memory by his siblings Chandrawattie “Dolly” Samwaru (Khemraj“Arnold” Samwaru), Churrammanie “Jas” Lal, (née Persaud), Seeranie “Sue” Ramcharitar (néePersaud) (Patrick Ramcharitar), Deorajh “Soodeen” Persaud (Meena “Rita” née Jagroop),Ritawantie “Esmay” Motee (Eshree Motee), Dilrajie “Chan” Lal (Sohan Lal), Somnauth “Deo”Persaud (Delcena Cave), Hermatie “Asha” Persaud, Maniram “Joey” Persaud (Padminie née Persaud), Saywack “Kishore” Persaud (Yvonne née Persaud), and a multitude of nieces and nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews, cousins and extended family in Baltimore, Maryland, and many, many friends – each of whom loved him dearly. Dad was the equally beloved brother-in-law of Oma’s many siblings and their own extended families who welcomed him with open arms whenever he spent time celebrating summer vacations and family milestones in Queens, New York. Jai attended No. 48 School in Guyana where he was also a formidable cricketer; and then boldly chose to emigrate to Canada in December 1970, embarking upon a new life of opportunities in Montreal, Quebec – a place he held close to his heart through his final days. In Montreal, he continued his college education and took on bookkeeping work while immersing himself in a newfound francophone culture. The city embraced this vibrant, outgoing young Guyanese immigrant as much as Dad loved the sports, food, and prominence of Montreal’s unique Canadian spirit. Dad knew, though, that there was only one person with whom he would share the joy and opportunity ahead of him in Canada. It wasn’t long after his arrival in Montreal that Oma, his childhood friend, joined him. They were married there on June 26, 1973 before welcoming their daughter, Natasha, the next year. Cambridge, Ontario, was where they would ultimately settle in 1975 with “Ravi” and Sonia completing their family by the autumn of 1976.
Jai began his career at American Standard in Cambridge and remained there for 34 years before embracing retirement to fulfill his love of travel to exotic locations in the Caribbean; Europe; India; across the USA and Canada; and of course, his Guyana homeland. He was a voracious reader and through it cultivated a rich, expansive awareness of politics and culture. Pairing this with an insatiable mind capable of recalling stories with ease, empowered Dad with the ability to carry on engaging conversations with anyone he’d meet. Dad was active in the Cambridge community, celebrating his Guyanese cricket culture proudly, attracting a wide group of friends and acquaintances throughout the years. He made everyone feel welcome in his presence, giving of himself in any way possible to help others on their own journeys of life. Jai will be missed dearly especially by everyone whose lives he graced with his presence, yet especially by his children and grandchildren through whom his legacy of love for family, thirst for knowledge, and service to others will live on.
