Obituary for Luis De Melo Machado

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our loving father Luis Machado. In his 89th year, surrounded by his family Luis passed away at St Mary’s General Hospital on Tuesday January 9, 2024.

Luis was born on the beautiful island of Terceira, Azores, Portugal in the village of Porto Judeu where he grew up and lived. He immigrated to Canada back in March of 1972 with his wife and young family in search of a better quality of life. Luis worked as a fisherman in Terceira and in Cambridge he worked at Galtex Textiles and the Oriental bar on Kerr St. His passion was his birds, chickens, pigeons and working in his garden. He loved making his Portuguese wine, family get togethers, trips to Long Point, Shades Mill and Pinehurst with his family.

Terceira always held such a special place in his heart. From the bull fights to the beautiful scenic views, the ocean breeze and all the memories he made there through his life and his 24 visits back with his wife and dog Candy. Forever an island boy.

Family was most important to Luis. His family grew rapidly on the foundation of love he built with his wife Filomena. Devoted to his 4 children, 10 grandchildren and 12 great grand grandchildren.

In the last 9 years since is 80th birthday, our family had grown even more close to him.

This past July 2023 Him, his wife and children had made their way back to Terceira one last time. To have their last most memorable trip together. Memories that will be forever held in our hearts. Back to our family home. Where Luis danced, sang and embraced every moment. Reminding his family what life is all about. These memories with his family during this trip is what he wanted them to remember.
